About the Event

The First Aid for Mental Health Level 2 (SCQF Level 5) training course is designed to provide individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills to identify, understand and respond to mental health problems. The course covers a range of topics related to mental health, including common mental health problems, the effects of stigma, and practical skills for supporting someone in distress.


Throughout the course, participants will learn about the importance of mental health first aid, how to recognise when someone may be experiencing a mental health problem, and how to provide initial support. They will also gain an understanding of the recovery process and how to signpost individuals to appropriate professional help.

  • Understanding mental health and the impact of stigma
  • The role of a mental health first aider
  • Common Mental Health Problems
  • Understanding anxiety, depression, psychosis and eating disorders
  • Recognising the signs and symptoms
  • Mental Health Crisis Situations
  • Understanding suicide, self-harm and substance misuse
  • Responding to a mental health crisis
  • Providing Mental Health First Aid
  • Active listening skills
  • Communicating effectively with someone experiencing a mental health problem
  • Providing initial support and signposting to appropriate professional help


Assessment:

Participants will be assessed through a combination of written and practical assessments, including a multiple-choice question paper and a scenario-based assessment. Successful completion of the course will lead to a Level 2 qualification in First Aid for Mental Health (SCQF Level 5).
